Ocean Research Foundation's mission is to support scientists working to help people better understand and better protect our oceans and all marine life.
We provide technical, financial, and logistical support for ocean science and conservation projects.
Our Fiscal Sponsorship program provides scientists and activists an alternative to starting up and running a new nonprofit organization.
By hosting new projects under our non-profit legal and tax-exempt status, we encourage innovation, allowing new ideas to grow quickly and inexpensively.
How it works
Fiscal sponsorship is a formal legal arrangement in which a 501(c)(3) public charity (like Ocean Research Foundation) sponsors a project that lacks tax-exempt status. In return, Ocean Research Foundation receives a small administrative fee (a percentage of donations) with no up-front costs to the new organization. This alternative to starting your own nonprofit allows you to seek grants and solicit tax-deductible donations under your sponsor's exempt status.
Fiscal sponsorship allows a new project to start simply and affordably, unhampered by the legal expenses, administrative burdens and bureaucratic red tape that keep many great ideas from developing.
We provide the legal structure, project design support, and a full range of administrative and financial support services that allow nonprofit projects to get up and running quickly, keeping leaders focused on their mission, and not the paperwork.
Sponsored projects who want additional assistance with fundraising and project design can also take advantage of our consulting services for very reasonable fees.
Have a great idea to protect our oceans? Do you have an existing research project outside the US -- and want non-profit status in to accept donations and grants from the United States?
Please get in touch with us and we'll be happy to discuss Fiscal Sponsorship opportunities with you.
